How to Recover From a Traffic Drop

A traffic drop is stressful, but panic leads to bad fixes. Work through it methodically and you will usually find a clear cause.

Confirm it is real

Check GA4 and Search Console over a longer window. Some "drops" are seasonality or a tracking glitch, not a ranking loss.

Identify what changed

  • Did you redesign, migrate, or change URLs?
  • Was there a Google update around that date?
  • Did tracking or indexing break?

Diagnose by pattern

A site-wide drop suggests technical or algorithmic causes. A few-page drop suggests content or competition on those topics.

Fix and monitor

Address the most likely cause first, then watch for two to four weeks. SEO recovery is rarely instant.

If you would rather not diagnose it alone, a free audit will pinpoint the likely cause.
